I have heard many people say that he's a great speaker, so your comment, "he spoke for over 30 minutes extemporaneously and kept our attention the whole time. (I’d love to see our current president try to wing it like that for 30 minutes…)" doesn't surprise me. And I think the current occupant could keep your attention for 30 minutes... you'd simply be waiting in anticipation of what bizarre ideas he would express next, and how he'd mangle the language in the process.
