Adam, welcome to the blog. Great insight. I hadn't thought about the possibility of tax breaks. That does make sense.

Ryan,

I've been living in St. George now for about 3 years and have been equally inquisitive of the FLDS. To give you some insight on why the homes in CC/Hilldale are not finished with traditional brick or stucco, it's because they are trying to avoid taxes. If the home is not finished completely then the county can't tax them on a finised home. Also, the value of the home stays down, so again the tax assessment is lower egualing lower taxes. They don't keep up the yards because the men are really only interested in making money. They work mostly construction jobs in St. George and they work all the time. Usually ten to twelve hour days. You are right about the women. They are busy raising the kids, making clothes and running a household. I hope this gives you a little better info.

Jeremy, you should definitely stop by if you get a chance. Very cool place.

Mike, I'm not exactly sure where Centennial Park is. I found one in Arizona, but it is much further south. If that's the one you mean, we definitely didn't go there. This one was actually closer to Hildale than many of the homes in CC.

If you remember the paper on FLDS architecture, do let me know. I'd love to add it to my collection.

I think Debi mentioned that the book by Elissa Wall about her experience said something to that effect - if it wasn't destroyed, it was definitely no longer revered once Warren Jeffs took power. That was clear from the condition of the schoolhouse. I wonder if a reader will confirm that it was destroyed.

Ryan, I can't help but the well-kept house you have a pictured here was in Centennial Park. I have seen an interview of members of the Centennial Park group that was conducted in a house very much like that one. It was an interview by John Quinones (Primetime, 20/20, or whatever show he reports for). Did you wander through that area, south of CC/Hildale, or were you only in CC/Hildale?

I remember the large building you pictured. The SUSC band did a concert there in the early- or mid-1980s. A couple of the band members were from Colorado City, and they helped arrange it. This was obviously during Johnson's period as prophet, well before the Jeffs were in charge and began their repressive policies. And about the architecture... I am sure that I've read at least an informal paper or popular press article on FLDS architecture, but I don't remember where it might have been, unfortunately.

If I recall correctly, they had a stone monument dedicated to the 1953 raid but Jeffs ordered it destroyed a few years ago. I could be wrong about that, but I don't think so...

Wow. That's quite the experience. I had never thought it would be fun, or even interesting, to visit the FLDS communities in what I thought was Hilldale, but as it turns out is mostly in Colorado City, AZ. By your post, though, it sounds quite interesting and worth at least a stop on the way out of Zion, headed toward Utah.
