Prague Day 3 – Old Town Sites of Interest

Debi was off to her workshop so it was just me seeing the sites. I used a number of websites, including this one, to come up with things to see and do in Prague. My plan was to go see and do things each morning then spend the afternoons catching up on work (I was kind of on vacation but just had too much to do to not keep up with email and such).

I started at the Museum of Communism, which was really interesting. The museum is a fairly detailed history of communism in the Czech Republic, and definitely not from a sympathetic view. I found it quite informative and worth the admission price.

From there I headed to the Museum of Alchemy (an alchemist’s house) where I took a tour of the underground alchemy labs that were discovered fairly recently (note: cash only).

I then headed back to the Old Town Square. I was actually looking for another museum but ended up not finding it. I did watch the Astronomical Clock show, which lasts about 30 seconds and is kind of lame (though impressive given how old it is). From there I headed to the Sex Machines Museum, which was somewhat interesting. I then walked to see the Man Hanging Out (a statue of Freud hanging over a street) and stopped for a traditional Czech meal – Svíčková na smetaně (marinated sirloin) at a restaurant nearby. It was… okay. Not particularly memorable. Unfortunately, two of the things I wanted to see were not available. The paternoster (a continuous elevator) in the New City Hall was closed and the book sculpture, Idiom, in the municipal library was also closed. That wrapped up most of my exploring for the day.

Here’s a map of my route:

I did go out a bit later that night to check out a bar recommended by a friend called the Alchemist Bar. The ambiance, menu, and drinks were super cool. If I could drink alcohol, I’m sure it would have been a lot of fun. I got a single drink then had to run to meet Debi to let her into the AirBnB.
